Home Again

We're still trying to recoup from market but wanted to share a couple of photos from market. One of the highlights of market is getting the opportunity to meet and learn from the many reknown quilters and designers in the industry. We had the opportunity to visit with Lynn Hagemeier of Kansas Troubles and Jodi Barrows of Square in a Square, just to name of couple. Eleanor Burns of Quilt in a Day and her son, Orion, shared their latest projects - and Eleanor stopped long enough to take a photo with us.

Exhausted

After two days of walking & walking & walking the show floor at the International Quilt Market, we are officially exhausted - but excited about the new things we saw. We don't want to spill the beans yet, but plan to attend our Mystery Reveal on Saturday, November 7 where we'll have show 'n tells and demos of many of the new items from market. Stay tuned..........

October 9, 2009

Classes, Classes, Classes

The first day of International Quilt Market is jam-packed with classes. The day started out early at 7:30 a.m. correcting errors on our class schedules. Then from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., we attended a total of 17 classes on a wide array of topics. We attended classes taught by such well-known designers as Jinny Beyer, Ricky Tims, Robin Pandolph and Alex Anderson. We learned about new lines of fabric, new notions and tools, and business operations. Then, when we thought we couldn't do one more thing, it was time for Sample Spree. The frantic frenzy of hundreds of quilters racing into a room to buy fat quarter bundles of the new lines of fabric is something to experience. And of course, we had to experience it all! After a full day, we finally sat down to a late dinner after 10 p.m. and crashed in our room at 11. Tomorrow begins the actual market.

We're Off..............

...& we made it! We set off on Wednesday for our 2nd annual trek to Houston for International Quilt Market. We drove as far as Dallas on Wednesday, and hit the bed early (anything before midnight is early) to rest up for a day at the Moda warehouse. At Moda, we shopped and shopped and shopped - until they finally shut the lights out on us and closed the warehouse! Then we headed on to Houston, where it's a balmy 80 degrees (much better than the snow they're predicting at home). Friday is classes and market shopping spree!

To Market, To Market...

We're off to the International Quilt Market in Houston, Texas! We'll give you daily updates of our travels and quilting discoveries, so stay tuned!

Thank You!

We want to say thank you to everyone who participated in our shop hop this past weekend. We hope you had fun, we certainly did. We would also like to congratulate Judy Faurot of Scott City, winner of our $50 gift certificate drawing, and Margorie Elder, winner of the Blank Quilting gift bag.

We've had a couple of questions regarding the mystery quilt. One, the pattern calls for 4 red fabrics. We divided the total amount of red fabric needed and divided it between the 3 shops, so you have enough fabric but if you want it more scrappy, you're welcome to add more reds from your stash. Second, when making the blocks, co-mingle all the fabrics together from each shop's kit so that the fabric is mixed throughout the quilt. Please call if you have any other questions!

Again, Deb, Belinda, Janet and Sharla say "thanks" for supporting us!

July 17, 2009

Now That's Rural

Ron Wilson, with the Huck Boyd National Institute at Kansas State University, has a weekly radio show called Kansas Profile. This week his show is called 'Now That's Rural' and profiles the quilt shop! When the audio file is posted on their website, we'll post the link here. For now, here is the text version:

By Ron Wilson, director of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development at Kansas State University.

Blogspot. That sounds to me like a stain you would try to wash out of your shirt, but instead it refers to a way of having a kind of virtual conversation online. A blogspot is a website where a person can post his or her comments in a web log, or blog for short. Now imagine combining the high-tech blogging process with something as classic as your great-grandmother´s quilt. It combines high tech and soft touch.

That´s a formula for the success of this quilt shop in rural Kansas.

Sharla Krenzel is the co-owner of Prairie Flower Quilt Company in Leoti, Kansas. As a kid, Sharla grew up learning to sew in 4-H. In 2008, Sharla took her mother to a quilting class in Colby, and she noticed that half the women in the class were from her hometown of Leoti. She thought, "Hmm, there might be an opportunity here."

So Sharla, who is also the Wichita County Economic Development Director, started exploring the possibility of creating a community-owned quilt shop in Leoti. It turned out that Belinda Oldham, the Family And Consumer Sciences agent for K-State Research and Extension-Wichita County, had been successfully offering quilting classes in the county since the late 1980s.

Building on this local interest, Sharla worked on establishing a quilt shop in Leoti so that people could get their supplies locally. Eventually, a core group of five women decided to set up the shop themselves. These women included Sharla Krenzel, Deb Case, Belinda Oldham, Marilyn Wilbur and Krenzel's mom, Janet Droste.

The women identified a store site in Leoti and went to work. Along with Sharla's husband Alan who handled most of the carpentry work, the women remodeled the space by painting, building displays and counters and processing inventory for the new business. They covered the windows with brown paper to create some curiosity.

Sharla says, "Everybody fell into the niches that fit them." For example, Sharla was good at marketing and Marilyn was good at keeping the books. Belinda was an expert at quilting, Deb enjoyed ordering the supplies and Janet enjoyed getting craft-related items.

One of Sharla´s ideas was to start a blog. She says, "At the economic development meetings, all they talked about was online stuff like blogging and social networking." So for the quilt shop, Sharla set up a website with a blogspot on which they could post their accounts of what was happening with the store. Every few days they would post a report on how the store was progressing. It read kind of like an online version of a daily diary.

On Jan. 1, 2009, the store opened for business."Opening day was packed. You couldn´t even move in here," Sharla says, so the store was launched successfully.

Then came Jan. 20, 2009. Marilyn Wilbur, one of the founders, passed away suddenly in her sleep. It was a huge shock, but the other women kept on working.

Prairie Flower Quilt Company offers a full-line of quilting supplies, including fabric, sewing notions, sewing machines, patterns, and books. The store also has a machine which can make custom quilts.

The store is drawing customers from all over southwest Kansas, but one of the especially interesting factors is the visibility that their blogspot has received. Their blogs are posted on the web at www.prairieflowerquilts.com. Visitors have come to their website from more than 30 states coast to coast, and from such countries as France, Norway, Turkey, Spain, Australia, The Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Wow.

Using the tools of technology, those with an interest in quilting can be connected world wide - all the way to the rural community of Leoti, Kansas, population 1,613 people. Now, that´s rural.

Blogspot. No, it´s not that coffee stain on your shirt. It´s a modern way of communicating online. We salute Sharla Krenzel, Deb Case, Belinda Oldham, Janet Droste, and the late Marilyn Wilbur for making a difference with their entrepreneurial interest. If more rural communities can establish businesses and extend their reach using technology, we can be like a gifted quilter who creates a beautiful pattern.

There are 10 shops in the hop, and at each shop you will receive six 3" strips. Each shop will have a different quilt design using all the strips (60 in all). You can then choose which quilt pattern to use to finish your quilt. The bright flowered border is the focus fabric that will be featured in every shop's quilt. Was definitely a challenge to come up with a design using such a variety of strips, but we're pleased with the way it turned out. We're anxious to see what the other shops' quilts will look like.

Paducah

Janet, and fellow quilter, Betty, recently enjoyed a week in Paducah, Kentucky at the American Quilter's Society Annual Quilt Show. Lots of beautiful quilts, throngs of quilters, piles of fabric, mountains of patterns, jillions of notions....and miles and miles of walking! They took in a couple of Eleanor Burn's shows and paused with her cutout for a photo. Stop in the shop and see the catalog they brought back of all the outstanding quilts that were on display.

Sharing Shots

A customer sent me (I have to admit it was several weeks ago) a few "shots" of her latest sewing projects, made from fabrics she purchased from the shop. We thought we'd share!

This is a chenille baby quilt she made (for Deb's new granddaughter). And these are Easter dresses made for her daughters. Thanks for sharing Carmen!
