Sew Delish!
Seems we can't do anything at the shop without food! And of course, it's always good. Today, we enjoyed Janet's White Chili and Sharla's Salted Nut Roll Cookies while learning how to make Strip Tube Quilts. The ladies asked us to share the recipes, so we're posting them here.....enjoy!
White Chili
3 - 16 oz. cans Great Northern white beans
4 cups chopped, cooked chicken breasts (in a hurry, you can use canned chicken too)
1 tablespoons olive oil
2 medium onions, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 4-oz. cans chopped mild green chilies
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano, crumbled
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
6 cups chicken stock or canned broth
3 cups grated Monerey Jack cheese (about 12 ounces)
Sour cream
Place chicken in heavy large saucepan. Add cold water to cover and bring to simmer. Cook until just tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and cool. Remove skin. Cut chicken into cubes.
Heat oil in same pot over medium-high heat. Add onions and saute until translucent, about 10 minutes. Stir in garlic, then chilies, cumin, oregano, and cayenne and saute 2 minutes. Add undrained beans and stock and bring to boil. Reduce heat and add chicken and cheese to chili and stir until cheese melts. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Ladle chili into bowls, Garnish with sour cream if desired.
Salted Nut Roll Cookies
1 cup white corn syrup
1 cup sugar
1 cup peanut butter
5 cups corn flake cereal
1 cup salted peanuts
Combine syrup and sugar in medium sauce pan. Heat and stir to dissolve sugar. Bring to full boil. Remove from heat and add peanut butter. Stir until smooth. Stir in cereal and peanuts. Press into greased 9 x 13 pan. Cut into squares after cooled.

Late Bloomers
The end of summer approaches and Sandy Gervais is thankful for late blooming flowers to carry on with color until the first frost puts everything down for the winter. These late blooming flowers were the inspiration for Sandy's latest fabric line for Moda called Late Bloomers.'" Just as summer is waving its final goodbye, Late Bloomers will arrive in stores with a pop of subtle color mixed in with the warm golden brown tones of fall," Sandy explained. Prints and plaids in warm colors of muslin, brick red, teal, bronze and walnut stitched into your projects this winter are sure to be as pleasing as late bloomers in your garden. Stop in to to pick a bouquet of your favorite Late Bloomers!

Excited!!!
Ok, now I'm excited. I've had a good response from people interested in participating in the Farmer's Wife Quilt-a-Long, so I made the commitment and cut my fabrics today. I just love the colors in the Bonnie Blue Basics line! Won't it look awesome in the Farmer's Wife quilt?
Am I tempting anyone else to join us on this adventure?

Little Gatherings
The new hot colors are black and tan neutrals. And nothing shows off the latest trend better than the newest collection of fabric to arrive at the shop - "Little Gatherings" by Primitive Gatherings for Moda. From soft creams to tans to rich browns and blacks, this fabric is perfect for so many projects, such as this quilt called "45 & Life To Go".
Crazy?
I must be absolutely insane for even contemplating this, but heck, I’m a farmer’s wife and the challenge might be fun…..
Have you heard of Farmer’s Wife Quilt-a-Longs? Based on the book “The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt” by Laurie Aaron Hird, an absolutely gorgeous sampler quilt which features 111 six inch blocks inspired by letters from farmer’s wives in the 1920’s, a Farmer’s Wife Quilt-a-Long is an internet (blog or email) based quilt program. I’m thinking of sending out an email with hints, how-tos, and general information and chat featuring two of the blocks each week. Those who want to participate can make the blocks along with me, then reply with their comments, suggestions, questions, encouragement and chat. At a rate of 2 blocks a week, we’ll complete all 111 blocks in just over a year! And quilting together by email will make it more fun and encourage us to keep going (motivation is the key for me to accomplish this project – well, that and chocolate!)
I’ll need lots and lots of encouragement, so I’m hoping many of you will join me on this adventure. If you’d like to participate, just respond back by email (prairieflowerquilts@yahoo.com). If enough people show an interest, I’d like to start later this month.
Requirements to participate…..the only things you’ll need are “The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt” book that includes a CD with all the templates to make the blocks (if you’d like to order one from the shop just indicate that in your email, cost is $27.99); fabric (a little more about fabric selection below); the other usual sewing supplies and equipment; and enthusiasm!
Fabric….I’ve seen every style of fabric under the sun used, from contemporary to traditional, scrappy to coordinated. You can use your stash or we’d be happy to help you pick out fabric at Prairie Flower Quilt Co. I’m going to use traditional prints from the Bonnie Blue Basics collection. The author used over 300 different fabric scraps in her quilt, but estimates that it will require approximately 10 yards of fabric if purchasing.
Well, who’s up for the fun?! Just email me back to let me know.

Desired Things
When we go to quilt market, there are many things we desire to have, but the pocket book doesn't always agree. One thing we couldn't pass up at market this spring was the latest collection by Robin Pandolph called "Desired Things" in the yellow colorway. The gorgeous coral florals set against a bright yellow background just called to us, how about you?

105 Kansas Quilts 4 Kansas 150th
If you haven't seen the quilt exhibit "105 Kansas Quilts 4 Kansas 150th" at the Stauth Memorial Museum in Montezuma, hurry up and get there! The exhibit features a quilt from each of the 105 Kansas Counties along with their histories. The exhibit ends August 14. Wichita County's quilt is a redwork quilt featuring the names of members of the First Methodist Church of Leoti, made in 1936 for the church's 50th anniversary. The quilt was raffled as a fundraiser and eventually ended up at the Wichita County museum. It's just one of many beautiful quilts on display.

Dandelion Daydreams
We're in Christmas mode at the shop, but that doesn't mean everything is Christmas. The latest fabric to arrive is "Dandelion Daydreams" by Maywood Studios. What gal wouldn't love a handbag made from this fabric wrapped up in a pretty bow under the tree this Christmas.

It's August....Can Fall Be Far Behind?
Each year after packing away our summer memories, we look forward to the crisp, cool "Flannel Days" of fall. Days that are filled with the sound of leaves crunching under boots on long walks, the tempting aroma of slow simmering soups and stews and the beauty of fiery sunsets. It’s time to layer on flannel shirts by day and flannel sheets at night to chase away the evening’s chill. It’s time to stitch up simple quilts with beautiful, brushed prints that warm the body and soul of family and friends. Kansas Troubles' Lynne Hagmeier's new flannel collection for Moda captures the feeling of those crisp, cool fall days. But don't wait until then to pick up these great fabrics because they may not last that long!

Reindeer Games
"Who couldn’t use a few extra hands while stringing the lights on the tree?" Sandy Gervais said when describing her latest collection for Moda called 'Reindeer Games'. "These guys are more than willing to lend a hand – or in this case a hoof. In no time at all Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen will have your tree looking like the tree at Rockefeller Center. I’m not sure where Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen are. Maybe they are where my dear husband is when it is time to put the lights on the tree - nowhere to be found!"
'Reindeer Games' sports coordinating Christmas prints and candy cane stripes in traditional Christmas colors of red, green, cream and navy and Sandy's fun designs - just what you need for all your Christmas projects. We've got layer cakes, charm packs, jelly rolls and yardage just waiting for you!

Salted Peanut Chews
Here is Janet's cookie recipe she made for the last day of our Christmas In July event on Saturday. We've had several people ask for the recipe:
1 1/2 cups flour
2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 cups miniature marshmallows
1-10 oz. package peanut butter chips
2/3 cup corn syrup
1/4 cup butter or margarine
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups crisp rice cereal
2 cups salted peanuts
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, 1/2 cup softened butter or margarine, egg yolks, vanilla, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Beat mixture with an electric mixer on low speed until crumbly.
3. Firmly press the mixture into the bottom of a 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven.
4. Immediately sprinkle marshmallows over the surface. Return to oven for 1 to 2 minutes more or just until the marshmallows begin to puff. Remove from oven; cool while preparing the topping.
5. In a large saucepan, stir together peanut butter chips, corn syrup, 1/4 cup butter or margarine, and vanilla. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the chips are melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat; stir in rice cereal and peanuts. Immediately spread cereal mixture over the marshmallow layer.
6. Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours until firm. Cut into bars. Store in covered container. Makes 36 bars.
Hint: Line the pan with a piece of foil before pressing in the crumb mixture and baking. Then, you can easily lift out the bars to cut them.

The “new” are the plaids—look closely, they’re even in the blossoms of the floral print! We have kits of the Yuletide Magic quilt, but you better hurry because they won't last long!

Free Quilt Shop App
Do you have a smart phone? Did you know there was a free app available that will find quilt shops for you? The app, "Quilt Shops", is by New Track Media (Quilters Club of America) and you can put in a city or zip code or you can let it “find you” and it pinpoints shops near your location. It uses Google maps and if you click on the ‘pin’ for the quilt shop it will give you details on the shop. Tested it for Leoti and Prairie Flower Quilt Co. came up plus several other western Kansas quilt shops with driving distances from Leoti. This will be a great traveling tool - pretty cool!
