Reindeer Games

"Who couldn’t use a few extra hands while stringing the lights on the tree?" Sandy Gervais said when describing her latest collection for Moda called 'Reindeer Games'. "These guys are more than willing to lend a hand – or in this case a hoof. In no time at all Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen will have your tree looking like the tree at Rockefeller Center. I’m not sure where Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen are. Maybe they are where my dear husband is when it is time to put the lights on the tree - nowhere to be found!"

Salted Peanut Chews

Here is Janet's cookie recipe she made for the last day of our Christmas In July event on Saturday. We've had several people ask for the recipe:

1 1/2 cups flour
2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 cups miniature marshmallows
1-10 oz. package peanut butter chips
2/3 cup corn syrup
1/4 cup butter or margarine
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups crisp rice cereal
2 cups salted peanuts

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, 1/2 cup softened butter or margarine, egg yolks, vanilla, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Beat mixture with an electric mixer on low speed until crumbly.

3. Firmly press the mixture into the bottom of a 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven.

4. Immediately sprinkle marshmallows over the surface. Return to oven for 1 to 2 minutes more or just until the marshmallows begin to puff. Remove from oven; cool while preparing the topping.

5. In a large saucepan, stir together peanut butter chips, corn syrup, 1/4 cup butter or margarine, and vanilla. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the chips are melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat; stir in rice cereal  and peanuts. Immediately spread cereal mixture over the marshmallow layer.

6. Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours until firm. Cut into bars. Store in covered container. Makes 36 bars.

Hint: Line the pan with a piece of foil before pressing in the crumb mixture and baking. Then, you can easily lift out the bars to cut them.

You will find Santa, Christmas trees, vines, reindeer, children and sleighs,—all done in the elegant style of 19th century papercuts. The “new” are the plaids—look closely, they’re even in the blossoms of the floral print! We have kits of the Yuletide Magic quilt, but you better hurry because they won't last long!

Free Quilt Shop App

Do you have a smart phone?  Did you know there was a free app available that will find quilt shops for you?  The app, "Quilt Shops", is by New Track Media (Quilters Club of America) and you can put in a city or zip code or you can let it “find you” and it pinpoints shops near your location. It uses Google maps and if you click on the ‘pin’ for the quilt shop it will give you details on the shop. Tested it for Leoti and Prairie Flower Quilt Co. came up plus several other western Kansas quilt shops with driving distances from Leoti. This will be a great traveling tool - pretty cool!

Raspberry & Almond Shortbread Thumbprints

At Prairie Flower Quilt Co., we love an excuse to eat - Mystery Club, BOM, Christmas In July..... We received several requests for one of the cookies we served last weekend, so here it is!

Raspberry & Almond Shortbread Thumbprints

Ingredients:

• 1 cup butter, softened
• 2/3 cup white sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup seedless raspberry jam

Frosting:

• 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
• 3/4 teaspoon almond extract
• 1 teaspoon milk

Directions: 
1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).  

2.In a medium bowl, cream together butter and white sugar until smooth. Mix in 1/2 teaspoon almond extract. Mix in flour until dough comes together. Roll dough into 1 1/2 inch balls, and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Make a small hole in the center of each ball, using your thumb and finger, and fill the hole with preserves.

3.Bake for 14 to 18 minutes in preheated oven, or until lightly browned. Let cool 1 minute on the cookie sheet.

4.In a medium bowl, mix together the confectioners' sugar, 3/4 teaspoon almond extract, and milk until smooth. Drizzle lightly over warm cookies.
